USILA ALL-STAR GAME
USILA WEST ALL-STARS 14 - 11 OVER USILA EAST ALL-STARS

On the Sunday following the Championship Game, the teams competing at the USILA National Championship brought out their best to compete at the Lax World East/West All Star Game. Virginia Tech and Brigham Young were unable to send representatives to the game, Tech for Academic commitments and BYU for their religious convictions. The West team was comprised of players from Simon Fraser University, Trinity University, and the National Champion University of California. The East squad was made up of players from Georgia, Illinois, and Colorado State University.

Players chosen to represent Simon Fraser were Attackmen Peter Morgan, Aaron Lochhead, and Jeff Cathrea; Midfielders Marc Downey, Mark Davis, and Peter "Frank Railway" Schmidt; Defensemen Andrew Martin, Derek Wintermans, and Jason Swan; and Goaltender Tyrone Willushaw.

The game was a fun, unstressful wrap-up to the weekend, and all players enjoyed themselves. Aaron Lochhead and Mark Davis each scored for the west, while Marc Downey, Peter Morgan, and Jeff Cathrea all garnered assists in a 14-11 win. Defenseman Andrew Martin was named the West Defensive MVP for the game.

After the game, the USILA All-Tournament Team was announced. Attackman Peter Morgan was named for the first time, after compiling 8 goals and 7 assists in two games in the tournament. And defenseman Andrew Martin was named to the All-Tournament Team for the second straight year.

USILA SEMIFINALS
SFU 11 - 17 loss to UC Berkeley Golden Bears

The Simon Fraser Clansmen's season ended on a sour note with a 17-11 defeat at the hands of the University of California in the USILA Semifinals in St. Louis, Missouri. The game was delayed about 30 minutes by a thunderstorm, and this seemed to affect the Clan more than the Bears, as California jumped out to a quick three goal lead less than three minutes into the game. The Clan was able to close the score to 5-3 by the end of the quarter, but was shutout in the second quarter. California outscored the Clan 6-0 in the second frame for a half time score of 11-3.

Once again, the Clan came out strong in the third quarter. They scored 5 of the first 6 goals of the quarter, and were down just 13 to 9 at one point. However, the Bears proved just too strong, and outscored the Clan 3-2 in the fourth quarter for a 17-11 victory. Simon Fraser was once again led by Peter Morgan, with 4 goals and 2 assists. Jeff Cathrea added3 goals and Andrew Stubley 2, while Tyrone Willushaw made 18 stops between the pipes.

With the loss, the Clan finished its season with 14 wins and 1 loss (at the hands of the eventual champion), a PNCLL Championship and a USILA Semifinal appearance. This is an improvement upon last year's performance, which was highlighted by a 5th place finish at the USILA Nationals. Next year, the Clan's goals will be set even higher.

The USILA Championship was decided the next day, with California triumphing over the defending champion Brigham Young University Cougars 16-15 in a thrilling overtime victory.

The Clan remained undefeated for the season today with a 12-10 victory over the University of Illinois Fighting Illini in USILA Quarterfinal action in St. Louis, Missouri. The game was close for the first half, with Simon Fraser leading 4-3 after the first quarter, and a 5-5 half time score. However, the Clan continued it's recent trend of strong third quarters, outscoring the Fighting Illini 5-1 in the third frame. Despite being outshot, the Clan was able to have an advantage of possession most of the game, winning 13 faceoffs to Illinois' 12, and grabbing 33 ground balls to 25 by the Illini. Attackman Peter Morgan played an outstanding game for the Clan, racking up 3 goals and 5 assists. Jeff Cathrea added 3 goals of his own, while Aaron Lochhead netted 2 goals and 1 assist, and Tyrone Willushaw made 18 stops to backstop the Clan to victory.

The win brings the Clan to 14-0, and advance them to the USILA Semifinals, where the will meet the WCLL Champion University of California at Berkeley Golden Bears, who defeated the University of Georgia 17-7 in other semifinal action.

PNCLL CHAMPIONSHIP
SFU 10 - 7 over Western Washington Vikings

For the second straight year, the Simon Fraser University Clansmen emerged as the PNCLL Champions. The Clan defeated the Western Washington Vikings 10-7 today to earn the right to represent the PNCLL in the USILA National Championships, to be held in St. Louis April 30th to May 3rd.

Facing their toughest competition of the year in front of a mostly pro-Western crowd of about 250 people, the Clan started the game off slowly. Just as in their previous meeting this year, Western scored first. And also just like in their previous meeting, the Clan jumped right back to tie the game. It was a tough, defensive first quarter that resulted in a 1-1 quarter score.

The Clan played poorly in the second quarter, falling behind 4-3 while racking up 5.5 minutes in penalties. Peter Morgan scored with just 32 seconds left in the half to tie the game up at 4.

Simon Fraser improved their play tremendously in the third quarter, and scored early and often. Mark Downey scored less than 2 minutes into the quarter to take a 5-4 lead that the Clan would retain for the remainder of the game. For the whole quarter, SFU outscored Western 5-0, to take a 9-4 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Vikings kept the game interesting in the fourth quarter, scoring three quick goals to make the score 9-7 with 5:44 remaining. The defense and goaltender Tyrone Willushaw were able to hold the Vikings off, however, until Aaron Lochhead put the nail in Western's coffin, scoring with just over two minutes left to put the Clan up by three.

The defense played outstanding in parts of this game, allowing just two man-up goals to Western despite racking up 16 penalties for a total of 11.5 minutes. In contrast, Western received just 6 penalties for 4 minutes. Tyrone Willushaw played great in net, stopping 18 of 25 shots, including many point blank chances.

The Clan now leave for St. Louis on Tuesday night to compete for the USILA National Championship. The Clan are seeded 3rd in the tournament, and will face the 6th-seeded University of Illinois in their first game of this single elimination tournament at 5:00 PM Thursday evening.

The eight teams competing in the Championship tournament are RMILL Champion and defending USILA Champ (#1) Brigham Young; the top seeded club team in California, the (#2) U of California-Berkeley; PNCLL Champion (#3) Simon Fraser; mid-Atlantic representative, (#4) Virginia Tech; RMILL Runner-up (#5) Colorado State; Big Ten Champ (#6) Illinois; SELC Champion (#7) Georgia; and Lone Star Alliance representative, (#8) Trinity University of San Antonio. The Clan finished off their regular season undefeated with a 14-3 win over the Washington State University Cougars. Peter Schmidt and Jeff Cathrea led the scoring with three goals apiece, while Ewan Hunt scored 2 goals for the second straight game and defenseman Andrew Martin came up with a spectacular effort to notch his 6th goal of the season. SFU 12 - 5 over Western Washington Vikings

The Simon Fraser Clansmen emerged as the victors Sunday in a battle of the PNCLL's two remaining unbeaten teams. The Clan moved to 10-0 with a 12-5 victory over the Western Washington University Vikings, whose record now stands at 8-1.

The Vikings opened the scoring to put the Clan behind in the score for the first time all season, but SFU came back strong with 5 straight goals before the end of the quarter. The Clan were up 8-2 when Western scored on a man-up with just 5 seconds left in the half for an 8-3 half-time score. The Clan then scored 4 times in the third quarter before cruising to a 12-5 win.

Goaltender Tyrone Willushaw was again superb in net, despite this being his first action in four weeks. He stopped 17 of Western's 22 shots. Scoring came from some different sources this game. Marc Downey and Paul Farina each scored 3 times, while Ewan Hunt added 2 goals and 1 assist.

In all, middies scored 9 of the 12 goals in this game. Simon Fraser finishes out its regular season next Saturday, April 11, hosting the Washington State Cougars, who are still fighting for a playoff spot. Game time is 1:00 PM at Terry Fox Field.

Mar 15/98
SFU 19 - 0 over Willamette Bearcats

On an extremely foggy day in Burnaby, the Simon Fraser University Clansmen moved to 6-0 with a 19-0 win over the first year Willamette Bearcats. 12 different players scored for the Clan, with Andrew Martin and Jeff Cathrea leading the way with three each.

Ewan Hunt recorded the shutout in goal, seeing his first action between the pipes all year. The Clan won by controlling possession over the game, tiring out the Willamette squad, who came with only 11 players. Willamette put up a good effort the whole way through, but were simply overmatched. Everyone got lots of playing time for the Clan, who next week travel to Tacoma to play the improved Pacific Lutheran University Lutes. Simon Fraser defeated the Lutes 18-1 in a game played in 5 inches of snow.

The Clan's next home games will be Saturday, March 28th against the University of Washington Huskies (1:00 PM, Terry Fox Field) and Sunday, March 29th against the University of Puget Sound Loggers (12:00 noon, Terry Fox Field).

Mar 8/98
SFU 17 - 5 over Whitman College Missionaries

The Clan moved to 5-0 today in a rematch of last year's PNCLL Championship game. Last year, Simon Fraser narrowly escaped with an 11-10 come from behind overtime win. This year, the result was the same, but the score was not as close.

The Clan scored just 21 seconds in and led the whole way to finish up with a 17-5 win over Whitman College. Faceoffs were a key to this game as the Clan had possession off of most draws. After leading 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, the Clan started to pull away. The score was 7-3 at the half and 11-4 after three.

Scoring was well spread out for Simon Fraser, with Peter Morgan scoring 4 times, and fellow attackmen Aaron Lochhead and Jeff Cathrea each tallying 3. Marc Downey and Paul Farina each scored twice to lead the middies. The team defense was strong in front of Tyrone Willushaw, who had another stellar game in net.

The Clan's next game is March 15th, against the PNCLL's newest addition, the Willamette Bearcats. Game time is 12:00 noon at Terry Fox Field.

Mar 1/98
SFU 22 - 1 over University of Oregon Ducks

The Clan remained unbeaten today with a 22-1 win over the University of Oregon Ducks. The Ducks, fresh off a narrow loss to Western Washington, provided the stiffest competition Simon Fraser has faced this year. The key to the win was great work on loose balls, which led to many fast breaks and many goals for the Clan. One Oregon goal after four by the Clan was all that goaltender Tyrone Willushaw would allow, as he continued his stellar play between the pipes. The score was 5-1 after the first quarter, and Simon Fraser led by a 10-1 margin at the half. Peter Morgan and Marc Downey led the Clan with 7 and 6 goals respectively. Tyrone Willushaw made 8 stops for the 4-0 Clan. The Clan will next face the Whitman College squad on Sunday March 8 (12:00 Noon at Terry Fox Field) in a rematch of last year's PNCLL Championship, which was won in overtime by Simon Fraser.

Feb 28/98
SFU 26 - 0 over Oregon State Beavers

Simon Fraser rolled to their third straight win of the season Saturday afternoon against an undermanned Oregon State squad. On a bitterly cold day in Burnaby, the Clan raced to a 26-0 victory over the Beavers, who arrived with only five players on their bench. Aaron Lochhead opened the scoring less than a minute in, and Simon Fraser never looked back. The score was 15-0 by halftime. Almost everybody got into the act scoring, with Peter Morgan leading the team with 6 goals and one assist. Aaron Lochhead added 5 of his own to go along with 3 assists. Tyrone Willushaw recorded his first shutout, stopping 6 shots. All in all, it was a very balanced effort from Simon Fraser, who host the University of Oregon Ducks tomorrow at 12:00 noon at Terry Fox Field.

Feb 22/98
SFU 22 - 1 over Lewis and Clark

In their first game of the season, (Sat, Feb 21/98) the Clan traveled to Portland to play the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers; a team the Clan had defeated 19-12 a year ago. This year, however, the games was quite different as the Clan defeated the Pioneers 22-1 on the Pioneers soggy home field. The Clan jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. Simon Fraser was up 15-0 before Lewis & Clark finally scored on a man-up on a backhand shot. Peter Morgan led Simon Fraser with 7 points (3 goals and four assists), while Jeff Cathrea scored 5 times and Aaron Lochhead potted 4 goals and 1 assist. Paul Farina led all middies with 2 goals and 1 assist. Tyrone Willushaw was very strong in between the pipes, allowing just 1 goal while stopping 14 shots.

Feb 23/98
SFU 20 - 1 over Linfield College

On Sunday, Simon Fraser traveled further south to McMinnville to play the Linfield College Wildcats. If the field at Lewis & Clark was bad, this one was even worse. With the field consisting more of mud than grass, the Clan slipped and slid their way to a 20-1 victory. Peter Morgan and Marc Downey each scored 4 times for the Clan, who are now 2 and 0 for the season. Tyrone Willushaw was again outstanding in goal, saving 10 of the 11 shots he faced. No one on the Clan escaped without being covered in mud, and they then traveled home, where the will face two more opponents next weekend. Oregon State visits on Saturday (1:00 PM, Terry Fox Field) while The University of Oregon will challenge on Sunday (12:00 Noon, Terry Fox Field).
