The Simon Fraser Clansmen captured their third straight PNCLL title tonight by
way of a 21-8 victory over the Whitman College Missionaries in Bellevue, WA. The
Clan also defeated Whitman to win the 1997 title, in a thrilling overtime victory.
Clan midfielder Mark Girotto continued his strong tournament and opened the score
just over a minute into the game to give Simon Fraser a 1-0 lead. Athen Yuen added
another before Whitman star attackman C.J. Calvert scored to close the score to
2-1. The two teams then traded goals for most of the first quarter, with Calvert
evening the score at 4-4 with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter.
However the Clan would close out the quarter with a bang, scoring two late goals
to finish off the first frame with a 6-4 lead.

they were ended in the third, as the Clan scored 7 unanswered goals, despite amazing
goaltending by Whitman keeper Ernie Burgess. However, Whitman never gave up and
were outscored just 4-3 in the fourth, to make the final score 21-8 in favour

SFU 16, Western Washington Vikings 9
On a hot night in Bellevue, WA, the Simon Fraser Clansmen defeated rival Western
Washington University for the third time this season to capture the PNCLL Division
I crown. It was a hard fought match for most of the first half, but as in their
previous two meetings this season, the Clan once again prevailed with a strong
second half.
Western attackman Steve Worden opened the scoring early in the game, but this
lead would prove to be short-lived. On the Clan's next possession, senior midfielder
Marc Downey converted a pass from Peter Morgan on a fast break to tie the game
up at 1. Goals by Mark Girotto and Aaron Lochhead followed before Western was
able to narrow the lead down to 3-2 before the quarter end.
Western scored two in a row to take a 4-3 lead in the second quarter, but once
again, the Clan rebounded quickly. Mike Fernquist scored a goal and Aaron Lochhead
netted his second of the game to give the Clan the lead back, and then Peter Morgan
scored another two to give the Clan a 7-4 lead. The quarter closed out with the
Clan scoring two more goals to Western's one, for a 9-5 halftime lead in favour
of the Simon Fraser.
The third quarter was a tight one, with each team scoring just 2 goals. Western's
goalie made many spectacular saves to keep the game close. Western scored the
first goal of the 4th to close the score to 11-8, but that was as close as they
would get, as Jeff Cathrea netted 3 fourth-quarter goals to help finish of the
Vikings 16-9.
Attackman Peter Morgan led the way on offense for the Clan, scoring 3 goals and
adding 3 assists. Defenseman Andrew Martin had a spectacular game for Simon Fraser,
and was named game MVP.
In other PNCLL Playoff action, Whitman College avenged a double-overtime loss
earlier in the season by destroying Pacific Lutheran 20-4. This ended PLU's cinderella
season and gave Whitman the PNCLL Division II title and the right to battle Simon
Fraser for the PNCLL Championship.

SFU 17, Western Washington Vikings 4
In a rematch of the PNCLL's top two teams, the Clan came out on top to move to
6-0. For the second time this year, Simon Fraser defeated the Western Washington
University Vikings, who now stand at 5-2. With the 17-4 victory, the Clan now
have a strong hold on the PNCLL Division I championship.
Due to final exams, Western brought only 12 players to the game. Taking advantage
of Western's short bench, the Clan were able to jump out to a quick lead. It was
3-0 before Western was able to get on the board. Attackman Peter Morgan scored
3 of the Clan's first 4 goals as the Clan closed out the first quarter with a
5-1 lead.
The second quarter was more closely fought, with Peter Schmidt and Aaron Lochhead
scoring the Clan's only 2 goals of the quarter. The score for the quarter was
2-1 in favour of the Clan, for a 7-2 half-time score.
The Clan all but sealed the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings
5-0, led by Jeff Cathrea's 3 goals. In the fourth quarter it was more of the same,
with the Clan outscoring the tired Vikings 5-2 to finish of with a 17-4 victory.
The 6-0 Clan are now off for a few weeks. Their final two regular season games
will be at SFU, where they will host the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers on
April 3rd, (@ 1:00 PM) and the University of Washington Huskies on April 4th (@

SFU 24, University of Washington Huskies 2
On a rainy night at Husky Stadium in Seattle, the Simon Fraser Clansmen improved
their record to 5-0 with a 24-2 victory of the University of Washington Huskies.
Despite having almost their entire line-up dressed for the first time this season,
the clan still started out slowly. The score was 4-2 for the Clan midway through
the first quarter, but that was as close as the Huskies would get. Simon Fraser
finished off the quarter with two more goals for a 6-2 first quarter score. They
scored eight unanswered goals in the second for a 14-2 half-time lead. The Clan
continued its ways in the second half, controlling the ball most of the way en
route to a decisive 24-2 victory.

with the SFU basketball team, led the Clan with 5 goals and 2 assists. Jeff Cathrea

SFU 13, Whitman College 1
On Sunday, The Clan traveled to Walla Walla to face the Whitman College Missionaries.
Whitman, perennially one of the strongest teams in the PNCLL, had battled Western
Washington University hard the night before, and ended up losing 11-10 in double
overtime. Johnny Yeung was moved to attack this game for the Clan, starting in
place of Mike Fernquist, who would start on the bench with a suspected broken
thumb.
There would be no slow start for the Clan in this game, as they scored the only
four goals of the first quarter. Aaron Lochhead opened the scoring with a rocket
shot on a fast break and the Clan never looked back.
The Clan continued to shut down the Whitman offense in the second quarter, despite
having to kill off seven penalties. The Clan added three more goals of their own
in the quarter to head to the half with a 7-0 lead.
It was more of the same in the second half. After Whitman's Eugene Kang opened
the second half scoring just a minute and a half in, the Clan finished off the
game with six more goals to end the game with a 13-1 victory. Aaron Lochhead lead
the way for the Clan, scoring 4 goals and 1 assist. Marc Downey led the midfielders
with 2 goals and 2 assists of his own.
The victory moved the Clan's record to 4-0. Simon Fraser, currently ranked #5
in the USLIA poll, may move up a spot with these two strong victories. The new
poll will be announced Wednesday, March 10th. The Clan's next action will be Saturday
night, March 13 in Seattle against the University of Washington Huskies at Husky
Stadium. Game time is 7:00 PM. Two years ago, in the Clan's last game at Husky
Stadium, UW escaped with a 10-7 victory, marking the only blemish on SFU's 1997
regular season. On Sunday, the Clan will travel home for a rematch against the
Western Washington Vikings at Terry Fox Field at SFU. Game time is 3:00 PM. Two
weeks earlier, the Clan defeated the Vikings 16-12 in a thrilling match in Bellingham.
If you're in the area, don't miss the game, it should be very exciting.

SFU 17, Washington State 2
This weekend, the Clan embarked on their longest road trip of the season, a two-game
swing of Eastern Washington, where they would face the Washington State University
Cougars and the Whitman College Missionaries.
On Saturday, the Clan faced the 2-2 Washington State Cougars. Missing five regulars,
including four left-handers, the Clan started off slowly. After a goal by Marc
Downey opened the scoring, the Clan went scoreless for most of the first quarter.
The Cougars tied the score at 1-1 with 2 minutes remaining in the quarter before
Marc Downey was able to put another behind the Cougar goalie to make the score
2-1 at the close of the first quarter.
Attackman Jeff Cathrea scored 2 goals to lead off the second quarter before WSU
Attackman Ryan Kelley put one past Clan goaltender Tyrone Willushaw on a man-up
to make the score 2-0. That was as close as the Cougars would get however, as
the Clan shut them out for the remainder of the game en route to a 17-2 victory.
Jeff Cathrea led the Clan in scoring with 6 goals and 2 assists, while midfielder
Marc Downey scored 5 goals and 2 assists of his own. Freshman Tyler O'Grady scored
his first 2 goals of career, while Johnny Yeung, another freshman midfielder also
scored the first of his career.

SFU 16, Western Washington Univ. 12
In the most anticipated game of the early 1999 season, the Simon Fraser Clansmen
travelled to WWU to play on articificial turf for the first time this season.
As it turned out the weather cooperated and the game was played under clear skies
on the campus of WWU.
These two teams are expected to battle it out for PNCLL supremacy and Friday nights
game was a classic all the way through. Western Washington were the early aggressors,
banging SFU bodies whenever they had the chance and using their speed in the midfield
to move the ball into dangerous scoring positions.
Western Washington opened the scoring midway through the first period and led
3 - 1 at the fifteen minute mark. SFU middie Marc Downey scored a spectacular
goal (one of his four on the evening) taking a long pass from goaltender Wullishaw
and beating 3 defenders before bouncing a shot into the net.
Clansman middie Paul Farina was good on a couple of opportunistic chances early
on staking the clan to a small lead heading into the second quarter. Farina ended
up with four goals.
Then with the addition of late arriving Peter Morgan, SFU more than held their
own for the next twenty minutes, going ahead 8 - 6 in the second quarter.
WWU were not to be denied however and using their athleticism kept within striking
distance of the Clan until the third quarter. The third quarter saw WWU take advantage
of loose balls and quick ball movement to pound four straight goals by netminder
Wullishaw and suddenly SFU found themselves down by two.
The fourth quarter was great action as both teams wouldn't let up, scoring goal
for goal. Until, late in the fourth after killing off four consecutive penalties,
the visiting SFU team showed their offense was too much for the tired WWU defenders.
The Clan showed patience in their offense, hitting the open man to break the game
open and win by four.
But this was an excellent matchup all the way through and the Clan look forward
to hosting the return match on March 12.

SFU 22-3 over University of Oregon
The Simon Fraser Clansmen opened up their defense of the PNCLL Title with a match
against last year's PNCLL Semifinalists, the University of Oregon Ducks today
in Eugene Oregon. The Clan jumped out to an early lead just 18 seconds into the
game, as Jeff Cathrea netted the first goal of the year on an early man-up situation.
The Clan continued at this quick pace, jumping ahead of the Ducks 7-0 before the
first quarter was over.
The second quarter was more of the same. Oregon was able to get on the board on
a man-up situation, but the Clan outscored them 4-0 for the quarter to end the
half with a commanding 11-0 lead.
Oregon came out stronger in the second half, scoring two goals in the third quarter,
but were never able to get within 10 goals of the Clan. The Clan led 16-3 by the
end of the third, and outscored the over-manned Ducks 6-0 in the final frame to
finish with a 22-3 victory.
Paul Farina led the Clan with 7 goals and 5 assists on the day, while Jeff Cathrea
netted 6 goals an 2 assists. Mike Fernquist, a transfer from Division II Limestone
University, added 2 goals and 3 assists, while Aaron Lochhead managed 2 goals
and 2 helpers. Mark Girotto scored 2 goals and 1 assists while Senior captain
Marc Downey netted 2 goals of his own. Freshmen Athen Yuen was able to score a
goal in his first game with the Clan to round out the scoring.
Oregon State was forced to cancel its scheduled game against the Clan for February
14, so the Clan's next action will be Friday, February 26 in Bellingham, WA, where
they will face last year's PNCLL runner-up, the Western Washington University
Vikings.
