Season
Recap
While 2000 was a successful year by most standards, their is an air of disappointment
surrounding the Clans finish this year. After finishing 2nd in the USLIA
in 1999, there was optimism at Simon Fraser this year that a largely unchanged
team could capture the title in 2000.
The regular season went spectacularly, with the Clan dominating conference competition
and soundly beating Stanford and Loyola Marymount from the WCLL. The Clan outscored
the competition 222-34 while compiling a 10-0 regular season record, their third
consecutive undefeated regular season. The conference championship was another
walk, with SFU beating Washington State University 18-4 in the final, leaving
no doubt as to who was the top team in the PNCLL. The PNCLL Championship was SFUs
fourth straight. Also, with 9 victories over conference opponents, SFU increased
its conference winning streak to an amazing 41 games, a streak that dates back
to 1997.
However, the dominance was to end there, as Simon Fraser had the bad misfortune
of drawing Brigham Young University in their first game at the USLIA Nationals.
BYU, despite being ranked just 6th, is always one of the top teams in the USLIA,
and was on a mission, so to speak, after a disappointing regular season. BYU came
out on fire against the Clan, getting out to leads of 7-0 and 10-1 before finally
escaping with a 19-15 victory over SFU. SFU won its two final games in St. Louis,
finishing 5th in the nation, while BYU went on to win the whole thing. This marks
the third straight year that Simon Fraser has suffered its lone loss at the hands
of the eventual national champion in St. Louis. The team lost to Cal in the semis
in 1998, Colorado State in the final in 1999, and BYU in the quarters in 2000.
While the 5th place finish is a disappointment, there are still a number of bright
spots for the season. Senior attackman Aaron Lochhead set the team record for
points (85) and assists (41), while freshman attackman Ricky Clark set the team
record for goals (56). In addition, defenseman Andrew Martin obliterated his own
team mark for groundballs, racking up 151 to break his record of 78 set in 1999.
In addition, Martin was named the PNCLL Overall and Defensive MVP, while Lochhead
was named the PNCLL Offensive MVP. Martin, Lochhead and senior attackman Jeff
Cathrea were named to the PNCLL All-USLIA team, while those three and senior goalie
Tyrone Willushaw were named to the PNCLL Division I All-Star Team. Clark, senior
defenseman Derek Wintermans, and junior Peter Morgan received honourable mention
on that team. Finally, sophomore midfielder Athen Yuen was named to the USLIA
All-Tournament First Team for his strong performance in St. Louis.
Nine seniors, Willushaw, Martin, Wintermans, Lochhead, Cathrea, defensemen Tim
Whitehead and Clint Ireland, and midfielders Peter Schmidt and Paul Farina completed
their final seasons at SFU in 2000, leaving some holes to fill for 2001. However,
a solid core of underclassmen including Clark, Morgan, Yuen, Curtis Hodgson, Tyler
OGrady, and Brent Hoskins will still be around to lead the Clan in 2001.

USLIA 5th Place Game at St. Louis, MO
Simon Fraser
Clansmen 14
Michigan Wolverines
10
The Simon Fraser Clansmen made the best out of a disappointing USLIA tournament
today with a 14-10 victory over the Michigan Wolverines. With the win, the Clan
captured 5th place in the tournament, the best possible finish for teams that
lost in the quarterfinals.
This was another tough game for the Clan, as the 5th-ranked Wolverines played
them tough the whole game. The game was low-scoring and penalty-filled. The score
was just 5-4 at halftime, and the teams combined for 25 penalties on the game.
Simon Fraser didnt really open up the game until the 4th quarter, outscoring
the Wolverines 6-4 to make a 2 goal 3rd quarter lead into a 4 goal victory. For
the 3rd straight game, freshman attackman Ricky Clark led the Clan in scoring,
with 3 goals and 2 assists. Senior attackman Aaron Lochhead had 5 points of his
own, scoring 2 goals and adding 3 assists. Athen Yuen (3 goals, 1 assists), Peter
Morgan (3 goals) and faceoff specialist Paul Farina (2 goals) all had strong games
for SFU. Tyrone Willushaw had 16 stops in goal for Simon Fraser.
The win captured 5th place in the tournament for Simon Fraser, which was the 4th
straight year that the Clan had finished at least that high in St. Louis. The
team finished 5th in 1997, 3rd in 1998, 2nd in 1999, and 5th in 2000. This also
marked the third consecutive year that the Clans only loss was to the eventual
national champions, as BYU went on to beat Colorado State 17-13 in the final.
At the USLIA Awards banquet later that night, sophomore midfielder Athen Yuen
was named to the USLIA All-Tournament First Team.
This was somewhat the end of an era for Simon Fraser, as nine players who have
competed in the past four USLIA Championships played their final game for the
Clan. Goaltender Tyrone Willushaw; defensemen Andrew Martin, Tim Whitehead, Derek
Wintermans, and Clint Ireland; midfielders Peter Schmidt and Paul Farina, and
attackmen Aaron Lochhead and Jeff Cathrea were all seniors this year and played
their final games as Clansmen. Their loss will be a blow to the Clan, but strong
performances by underclassmen such as Ricky Clark, Athen Yuen, Peter Morgan and
Curtis Hodgson indicate that the Clan will still be a strong team in the years
to come.

USLIA Consolation
Round Semifinal at St. Louis, MO
Simon Fraser
Clansmen 17
Texas A & M Aggies
12
The Simon Fraser Clansmen salvaged their USLIA tournament today with a hard-fought
17-12 victory of the Texas A & M Aggies in St. Louis, MO. A day after a tough
loss to Brigham Young, the Clansmen were beaten up, hurt, and worn out, but struggled
past the injuries and a sweltering heat to advance to the 5th place game in the
tournament.
The game was close the entire first half, with the lead switching hands a number
of times. SFU was up 4-3 after the first quarter, and each team added 4 goals
in the second quarter for an 8-7 score at the half.
The Aggies score a quick goal in the third quarter to even the score at 8, but
after that the Clan broke the game open. They scored remaining 4 goals in the
quarter, to lead 12-8 after 45 minutes. The teams, pretty much traded goals for
the rest of the game. Texas A & M, gave a strong surge in the fourth, racking
up 19 shots, but Tyrone Willushaw was able to turn 15 of them away, giving the
Clan the edge they need to win the quarter 5-4 and the game 17-12.
Ricky Clark Once again led the way for the Clan, scoring 6 goals. Jeff Cathrea
(4 goals, 1 assist) and Athen Yuen (2 goals, 2 assists) also had strong games
for SFU. The defense of Andrew Martin, Tim Whitehead, Derek Wintermans and Clint
Ireland worked tirelessly today, as injuries limited the Clan to only 4 healthy
regulars on defense. Tyrone Willushaw had a great game in net, setting a team
record with 31 saves.
With the win, the Clan now advances to the 5th place game, where they will face
the University of Michigan, who defeated Virginia Tech 15-7 in the other consolation
round semifinal. Last year, The Clan beat Michigan in the USLIA Quarterfinals
in an 18-17 thriller.

USLIA National
Quarterfinal at St. Louis, MO
Simon Fraser
Clansmen 15
Brigham Young Cougars
19
The Simon Fraser University Mens Lacrosse Teams national championship
hopes came to an end today against a powerful team from Brigham Young University.
A bad start, a lack of depth, the heat and a charged-up BYU offense were factors
contributing to SFUs first loss of the season.
The game did not start out the way the Clan had hoped. With Simon Fraser getting
into penalty trouble early, BYU, led by attackman Rex Hardy and former NCAA DI
midfielder Steve Austin, capitalized on the Clans mistakes to jump out to
an early lead. It was 7-0 for the Cougars before the quarter was over, and the
Clan had a huge hole to dig themselves out of if they wanted to avoid being knocked
out of the tournament.
SFU started the second quarter a little better, with Athen Yuen scoring the Clans
first goal early in the quarter. However, BYU bounced right back with three more
goals to give them an impressive 10-1 lead midway through the quarter. The Clan
would get 2 more back before the half to make the score 10-3, but they were still
facing the same 7-goal deficit they had at the end of the first.
If the Clan wanted to make a comeback, theyd have to start the third quarter
off with a bang, and thats just what they did. Aaron Lochhead and Ricky
Clark scored quick goals to make the score 10-5 and give the Clan some momentum.
However, in what would be the story of the game, Simon Frasers momentum
was killed by penalties. Brigham Young scored three straight man-up goals to make
the score 13-5, a seemingly insurmountable lead. BYU would outscore Simon Fraser
6-5 for the quarter for a 16-8 lead after 45 minutes.
While the game seemed over to most, no one told Simon Fraser. Despite the long
odds, the Clan took charge of the game in the 4th and tried to mount an improbable
comeback. The Clan offense, led by Clark, Yuen, Lochhead and Peter Morgan, narrowed
the BYU lead throughout the quarter, at one point narrowing the score to 17-14.
However, all of SFUs momentum was killed when defenseman Andrew Martin was
called for a slashing penalty after clearly hitting a BYU players stick
at midfield. The bad call gave BYU yet another man-up situation, and BYU once
again capitalized to make the score 18-14 with just under 3 minutes left in the
game. Each team score once more before the end of the game for a final score of
19-15 BYU.
The Cougars, while seeded #6 in the tournament, were clearly the better team on
the day, as the #3 seeded Clansmen did not appear prepared for their competition.
BYUs offense was centred around two players, Rex Hardy and Steve Austin,
who scored 14 of BYUs 19 goals on the day. Brigham Young scored 6 goals
on man-up situations and also pumped in a number of goals on fast breaks. Simon
Fraser was led by freshman midfielder Ricky Clark, who scored 6 goals in his first
USLIA tournament action. Athen Yuen had 5 points for the Clan (3 goals, 2 assists),
while Peter Morgan (3 goals, 1 assist) and Aaron Lochhead (3 goals) also had strong
games offensively for the Clan. Tyrone Willushaw who had a strong game despite
being peppered by shots all day, had 24 saves for Simon Fraser
With the loss, Simon Frasers national championship hopes have ended. The
best the Clan can now finish is 5th place. The Clan will now compete in the consolation
bracket with the other quarterfinal losers, #5 Michigan, #9 Virginia Tech, and
#10 Texas A & M. The Clan will face Texas A & M, who lost 20-8 today to
#2 Sonoma State, in one game, while Michigan and Virginia Tech face off in the
other.

PNCLL Championship Game
at Portland, OR
Simon Fraser
Clansmen 18
Washington State Cougars
4
The Simon Fraser Clansmen captured their fourth consecutive PNCLL Championship
Saturday with an 18-4 victory over the Washington State Cougars. The win gave
SFU an automatic bid to the USLIA Championships in St. Louis, May 10-13. Last
year the Clan narrowly missed out on a USLIA Championship, falling to Colorado
State in the championship game.
SFU got out to its customary fast start against the Cougars, pumping in two quick
goals before WSU got off the ground. The score was 5-2 after the first quarter.
The Clan extended the lead in the second, outscoring the outmatched and tired
Cougars 5-0 for a 10-2 halftime lead. The Cougars were playing their second game
in two days, having defeated Western Washington 12-4 the previous night to advance
to the PNCLL Final.
The second half was more of the same, with Simon Fraser cruising to a final score
of 18-4 and another PNCLL Championship. Peter Morgan (4 goals, 5 assists) and
Jeff Cathrea (6 goals, 2 assists) led the way for the 11-0 Clan. Derek Wintermans
had a sensational game in net for the Clan, making many point blank saves to hold
Washington State to four goals. He had 20 saves in all.
The Clan now head to St. Louis as the #3 seeded team in the 12 team tournament.
They receive a first round bye, and will face the winner of #6 Brigham Young and
#11 New Hampshire in their first game. Teams at this years USLIA National
Championships, in order of seeding, include:
1. University of California - Berkeley
2. Sonoma State University
3. Simon Fraser University
4. Colorado State University
5. University of Michigan
6. Brigham Young University
7. University of Tennessee
8. University of Colorado
9. Virginia Tech
10. Texas A & M University
11. University of New Hampshire
12. Minnesota State University
The Clan will have a tough road ahead if they want to return to the championship
game. They will likely have to beat perennial powerhouse Brigham Young, the 1997
Champions and 1998 runner-up. After that they would likely face Sonoma State,
who has been ranked #1 in the USLIA for most of the season, until being upset
by Cal in the WCLL Final. The field in this years tournament is exceptionally
strong and it should be a great tournament.

Western Washington Vikings 2
The Simon Fraser Clansmen closed out their third straight perfect regular season
Saturday with a 16-2 victory over Western Washington University. With the victory,
the Clan finishes the 2000 regular season with a perfect 10-0 record, heading
into the PNCLL Championship game in Portland, OR, April 29. The Clan has received
a bye to the Championship game by winning the PNCLL Division I regular season
title. In the final, the Clan will face the winner of the game between #2 Western
Washington University and #3 Washington State University. The winner of the PNCLL
Championship receives an automatic bid to the USLIA National Championships to
be held in St. Louis, MO May 10-13.
Despite the convincing final score, this was a hard-fought game all the way through.
Scoring wasnt opened until 5:01 into the game, when sophomore midfielder
Tyler OGrady beat Western goalie Mark Peterson to open the score for the
Clan. Peter Morgan scored a quick one and Ricky Clark added two more quickly to
make the score 4-0 midway through the first. Jeff Cathrea added one more before
the end of the quarter for a 5-0 lead after 15 minutes. The Clan expanded their
lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Vikings 4-0 for a 9-0 lead at the half.
Western buckled down in the third quarter, allowing only 2 goals by Simon Fraser.
However, Clan goalie Derek Wintermans, shut the door on Western, so the Clan was
able to increase their lead to 11-0 with only 15 minutes left. Western was finally
able to beat Wintermans twice in the final frame, but the Clan scored 5 of their
own to finish the game with a convincing 16-2 win.
Freshman attackman Ricky Clark had perhaps his best game of the season for the
Clan, scoring 6 goals and adding 2 assists. Jeff Cathrea added 3 goals and 1 assist,
while Peter Morgan (3 goals), Aaron Lochhead (1 goal, 2 assists), and Peter Schmidt
(1 goal, 2 assists) each had 3-point outings for the Clan. Derek Wintermans had
9 stops in goal for the Clan.
The Clan now travel to Portland, OR, for the PNCLL Championship. A win their would
mean a 4th consecutive PNCLL Championship for Simon Fraser, along with a 4th consecutive
trip to St. Louis for the USLIA Nationals. The Clans opponent for the final
will be determined on Friday, April 28th, when Western faces Washington State
in the PNCLL Semifinal. Look back next week to see how the Clan fared.

The SFU Lacrosse team rolled over two Oregon opponents this weekend to move to
9-0 on the season (7-0 PNCLL). On Saturday, April 1, Oregon State was the opponent
and the Clan licked the Beavers 31-0 in the Clans second straight shutout
of Oregon State. On Saturday, the University of Oregon was the victim, falling
28-1 to an overpowering Clan.
On Saturday, the game was never close, as the Clan pumped in 6 goals past the
Beavers in the first quarter. They then exploded for 11 in the second quarter
to put the game out of reach by the half. It was more of the same in the second
half, with Simon Fraser getting everybody involved while scoring 14 more goals.
Jeff Cathrea led the way for the Clan with 5 goals and 6 assists for 11 points,
while Aaron Lochhead (3 goals, 7 assists) had ten points and Peter Morgan added
8 goals. Derek Wintermans, filling in in goal for the injured Tyrone Willushaw,
recorded 11 saves for the shutout.
On Sunday it was more of the same for the Clan, as they rolled over the University
of Oregon 28-1. Oregon came up with a short bench, and due to injuries and an
ejection, finished the game with only ten players.
Peter Morgan set a club record with 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists), Aaron Lochhead
added 9 (5 goals, 4 assists), while Ricky Clark (5 goals, 3 assists) and Jeff
Cathrea (3 goals, 4 assists) each had big games their own. In addition, sophomore
defender Brent Hoskins recorded 3 goals for the hat trick. Derek Wintermans stopped
9 of 10 shots he faced between the pipes.
With the PNCLL Div I regular season crown firmly in grasp, the Clan now have 3
weeks off before they face Western Washington on Saturday, April 22. The game
will be held at Town Centre Stadium, game time is 1:00 PM.

Stanford Cardinals

The Simon Fraser Clansmen cemented their status as one of the top teams in the
USLIA today with a convincing 17-8 win over the #15-ranked Stanford Cardinal
on Terry Fox Field. The win moved the #3-ranked Clansmen to 7-0 on the season,
5-0 in the PNCLL.
The game did not start out the way the Clan intended, with the referees issuing
a 3 minute non-releasable penalty to the Clan for a field infraction, in addition
to another 30 second penalty for another field infraction. Stanford took advantage
of the early man-up situation, as midfielder Adam Horowitz opened the scoring
for the Cardinal just 34 seconds into the game. Midfielder Pete Munzig would
add two more quick goals for Stanford, giving them a 3-0 lead over a stunned
Clan just 3:35 into the game.
However, once the Clan got out of penalty trouble and was able to establish
some possession, they went on a tear. Senior attackman Jeff Cathrea opened the
scoring for the Clan at the 5:20 mark, and junior midfielder Peter Morgan added
another just 17 seconds later to make the score 3-2 Stanford. Just over two
minutes later, freshman attackman Ricky Clark scored his first of four goals
on the day to even the score at 3.
Stanford got into a little penalty trouble of its own midway through the first,
and Simon Faser took advantage. On a 6-on-3 advantage, sophomore midfielder
Athen Yuen set up Cathrea for the go ahead goal and the Clan never looked back.
The Clan would add two more goals before the end of the quarter, to end up with
a 6-3 lead despite the early deficit.
Over the next two quarters, the Clan was able to stay out of penalty trouble
for the most part and expanded their lead. SFU outscored Stanford 4-2 in the
second for a 10-5 half-time lead, and held off a strong puch by Stanford early
in the third to lead 15-8 after 3. In the fourth, the Clan shut the door on
Stanford, outscoring the Cardinal 2-0, while killing off another 3 minute non-releasable
penalty (this time for an illegal stick).
Jeff Cathrea led the way for Simon Fraser, scoring 8 points (5 goals, 3 assists),
while Athen Yuen (3 goals, 2 assists) and Aaron Lochhead (2 goals, 3 assists)
each continued their stellar seasons with 5 point games of their own. Ricky
Clark added 4 goals of his own, while Tyrone Willushaw had 20 stops between
the pipes for Simon Fraser.
The Clan return to action next weekend, hosting Oregon and Oregon State in PNCLL
Division I action. Oregon State visits Town Centre Stadium on Saturday, April
1 at 3:00 PM, while Oregon will face off against the Clan Sunday, April 2 at
3:00 PM, again at Town Centre Stadium in Coquitlam.

Western Washington
Vikings 5
The Simon Fraser Clansmen moved to 6-0 tonight, with an 18-5 victory over
archrival Western Washington University, the #21 team in the USLIA. The Clan
overcame a boisterous home crowd and poor officiating to grab a stranglehold
on the PNCLL Division I regular season championship. The first place team
in the division receives a bye to the PNCLL Final, held April 30th in Portland,
OR.
As always, the Vikings played SFU tough, and opened the score just after a
man-up situation early in the first quarter. The Clan fought right back, however,
and scored six in the quarter for a 6-1 lead after 15 minutes. The second
quarter was a tight-fought one, with SFU scoring just two goals and not allowing
Western any. The Clan had a seemingly strong 8-1 lead at the half, but the
deck seemed to be stacked against them in the second half.
After scoring an early goal to go up 9-1, Western scored two quick goals to
make the score 9-3. Then the referees took over. While already two men down
(with one of the penalties being against Clan goalie Tyrone Willushaw), the
Clan were called for 3 more penalties before the whistle was blown, including
one against replacement goaltender Mark Girotto for an equipment violation.
So, the Clan would be down 3 men for 1 minute, and two men down for another
34 seconds before they would be even again. With freshman midfielder filling
in in goal, and Andrew Martin, Brent Hoskins and Clint Ireland on D, the Vikings
were only able to get one shot on goal on the 6-on-3 advantage. When Tim Whiteheads
penalty expired, he joined the three on the field to successfully kill Westerns
6-on-4 advantage. The solid SFU man-down defense only allowed one shot on
net during the whole penalty kill.
There would be more of the same for the rest of the game, with the referees
calling what should have been non-calls, missing obvious penalties, and being
very inconsistent in general. In all, Western would have 18 man-ups for the
game, and SFU 9.
In the meantime, the Clan was able to somehow regroup and win the third quarter
3-2 for an 11-3 lead after 45 minutes.. They put it away in the fourth, firing
7 shots past the Western goalie, while allowing two for an 18-5 win.
Senior attackman Aaron Lochhead once again led the way for the Clan, scoring
5 goals and adding 3 assists. Sophomore midfielder Athen Yuen had a strong
game, scoring 3 goals and 3 assists, While Jeff Cathrea (5 goals) and Peter
Morgan (2 goals, 3 assists) each had 5-point outings for the Clan.
But the story of this game was the Clans defense. Tyrone Willushaw stopped
21 of the 26 shots he faced, and despite the numerous penalties, the Clan
only allowed 5 goals. The SFU man-down defense amazingly didnt allow
a single goal on any of Westerns 18 man-up opportunities. This brings
the Clans stretch of consecutive penalty kills to 33, stretching the
last 3 games!
The Clan face Western once more in the regular season, closing their season
down at home, April 22nd at Town Centre Stadium in Coquitlam. Game time is
1:00 PM, and the game would be well worth checking out, as tensions always
run high between these heated rivals. Meanwhile, the Clan looks forward to
its next game, hosting #13 Stanford University of the WCLL, Sunday, March
26th. (12 noon, Terry Fox Field at SFU)

Simon
Fraser Clansmen 21
Loyola Marymount
Lions 2
In their first regular season inter-conference game in team history, the Simon
Fraser Clansmen came out on top over the Loyola Marymount Lions of the WCLL.
With a 21-2 victory, the Clan dominated the worn out Lions, who were on the
last leg of a 3 game PNCLL road swing.
The game was back and forth early on, with both teams getting some early chances.
Freshman attackman Ricky Clark opened the scoring 2:25 into the game when
he took the feed from Aaron Lochhead on a fast break and put one behind LMU
goalie Pete Campbell. Senior attackman Jeff Cathrea added another for the
Clan before LMU attackman Mark Schoellkoph was able to beat Clan goalie Tyrone
Willushaw to make the score 2-1 SFU. However, Simon Fraser would bounce right
back, scoring six more goals in the quarter for an 8-1 lead after 15 minutes
of play.
It was more of the same in the second, as Simon Fraser scored 6 goals on LMU,
including 3 on man-up situations. Loyola Marymount midfielder Charley Kelley
was able to put one more past Willushaw, but that was all LMU would get. Willushaw
and a solid Clan defense would allow no more goals on the day, while killing
off all nine of LMUs man-up opportunities.
With a 14-2 half-time score, the pace of the game slowed down in the second
half, as the Clan scored 7 unanswered goals to cruise to a 21-2 victory. Senior
attackman Jeff Cathrea led the Clan with 5 goals and one assist, while senior
attackman Aaron Lochhead scored 2 goals and set up 4 others. Ricky Clark (5
goals), Athen Yuen (4 goals, 1 assist) and Peter Morgan (2 goals, 3 assists)
all had 5 point outings for the Clan. Goaltender Tyrone Willushaw stopped
18 of the 20 shots he faced, while defenseman Andrew Martin racked up an amazing
17 groundballs for the Clan.
The Clans next action will be Friday, March 10 in Bellingham, WA, where
they will face archrival Western Washington University. They then return home
for a Saturday afternoon match against PNCLL Division II team Linfield College.
The game will be at Coquitlams Town Centre Stadium at 3:00 PM.

The Simon Fraser Clansmen cruised today to a 35-4 victory over the PNCLLs
newest addition, Gonzaga University. The win moved SFU to 4-0 while Gonzaga
dropped to 0-5 on the season.
Junior attackman Peter Morgan, in his first game back after finishing his
commitments with the Simon Fraser basketball team, led the Clan with 5 goals
and 2 assists. Senior attackman Aaron Lochhead also continued his stellar
play, also adding 5 goals and 2 assists.
The outcome of the game was never in doubt, as freshman attackman Ricky Clark
opened the scoring just 1:03 into the game to start off a 12 goal first quarter
for the Clan. Simon Fraser added 13 more goals in the second to Gonzagas
one for a 25-1 half-time lead.
The second half was much of the same, as almost everybody in the team got
into the act scoring for the Clan. Derek Wintermans, Brent Hoskins, James
Perrin, Tim Whitehead, and Mark Numans all recorded their first goals of the
season. In all, 18 different players scored for the Clan, and 20 players got
on the scoresheet. In the 4th quarter, midfielder Mark Girotto stepped in
between the pipes for Simon Fraser, and stopped 3 of 4 shots in relief of
Tyrone Willushaw.
The Clan now face Loyola Marymount University of the WCLL on Sunday. The Lions
are completing a 3-game PNCLL road swing, which has seen them suffer close
losses to the University of Washington and Western Washington University.
Game time is 12:00 noon on Terry Fox Field on the SFU Campus.

Simon
Fraser Clansmen 15
Washington
State Cougars 4
Despite rain, fog,
and a sluggish start, the Simon Fraser Clansmen improved their record to 3-0
Sunday with a 15-4 victory over the Washington State University Cougars on
Terry Fox Field. Senior attackmen Aaaron Lochhead and Jeff Cathrea led the
way for the Clan, each scoring 4 goals and adding an assist.
Simon Fraser started the game slowly, not getting their customary fast start
against a determined group of Cougars. The Clan killed three penalties before
finally opening the score at the midway point of the quarter. However, the
Washington State came right back and tied the score at one. The teams each
added one more before quarters end for a score of 2-2. This is in stark
contrast to the Clans previous two games, which had first quarter scores
of 7-0 and 7-3 over Washington and Whitman respectively.
Early in the second quarter, Washington State recovered a loose ball on a
broken clear, raced down the field and put a shot behind Tyrone Willushaw
for a 3-2 lead. This was the first time all season that SFU had been behind
in a game, and it proved to be the wake up call they needed. Less than a minute
later, sophomore midfielder Athen Yuen drove and put one past the WSU goalie.
Peter Schmidt added another just 43 seconds later and the Clan had the lead
back for good.
The Clan would add a total of 13 straight goals before the Cougars scored
on a man-up situation with just 24 seconds remaining in the game. The 11 goal
margin of victory was not entirely indicative of the game, as Washington State
played strong throughout. However, the Clans solid offense and the Cougars
short bench eventually caught up with them and the Clan pulled away.
The win moves SFU to 3-0 and drops Washington State to 2-2. The Clans
next action will be next weekend, March 4th and 5th. On Staurday the 4th,
SFU will host the PNCLLs newest entry, the Gonzaga University Zags (3:00
PM - Coquitlam Town Centre Stadium) and on Sunday will face the visiting Loyola
Marymount from the WCLL (Noon - Terry Fox Field) in the Clans first
regular season out-of-conference action in team history..

Simon
Fraser Clansmen 23
Whitman Missionaries 6
The Simon Fraser Clansmen resumed their 2000 season saturday with a convincing
23-6 over the Whitman College Missionaries at Town Centre Stadium in Coquitlam.
Senior attackman Aaron Lochhead once again led the way for the Simon Fraser,
notching 5 goals and 3 assists for the 2-0 Clan.
The Clan jumped out to a quick start, as senior attackman Jeff Cathrea put
one behind the Whitman goaltender just 40 seconds into the game. The Clan
would add four more goals in the first ten minutes of the game before Whitman
was able to get on the board. Whitman attackman C.J. Calvert helped stop the
bleeding as he was able to beat Clan goalie Tyrone Willushaw to make the score
5-1. The two teams traded goals before the quarter was over for a 7-3 score
at the end of the first.
The Clan increased its lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Missionaries
4-0. Freshman Aiden Ball scored his first career goal to start the quarter,
and Lochhead, Athen Yuen and Ricky Clark each added one to finish out the
half with a score of 11-3 in favour of Simon Fraser.
The Clan put the game away in the third quarter, dominating the play and outscoring
Whitman 8-0 for the quarter to lead 19-3. In the fourth quarter, senior defenseman
Derek Wintermans replaced Tyrone Willushaw in net to get his first action
between the pipes in 4 years. The Clan got into penalty trouble and Wintermans
surrendered three goals, each of them on Whitman 6-on-4 advantages. Peter
Schmidt, Bart Wisniowski, Johnny Yeung, and defenseman Clint Ireland each
recorded their first goals of the season to round out the scoring and give
Simon Fraser a 23-6 victory.
The win improved Simon Frasers record to 2-0 on the season, while Whitman,
last years PNCLL Division II Champions, dropped to 0-1.

Simon Fraser Clansmen 18
Washington
Huskies 2
The
3-time defending PNCLL Champion Simon Fraser Clansmen opened up their season
today with a convincing 18-2 over the University of Washington Huskies in Coquitlam,
BC. The win extended the Clans PNCLL winning streak to 32 games with their
last conference loss coming in 1997 to the Huskies in Seattle, WA.
The outcome of the game was never really in doubt as the Clan scored just 22
seconds into the game en route to a 7-0 opening quarter. The score was 9-0 before
Husky midfielder Brett Schwager was able to slip one by Clan goaltender Tyrone
Willushaw midway through the second quarter. Simon Fraser was able to notch
5 more goals before the end of the quarter for a half-time score of 14-1 in
favour of the Clan.
With the game in hand, the Clan cruised through the second half, outscoring
the Huskies 4-1 for a final score of 18-2. The win gave Simon Fraser a record
of 1-0 on the season and dropped Washington to 1-2.
Senior attackman Aaron Lochhead had a monster game for Simon Fraser, scoring
4 goals and adding 7 assists for a total of 11 points. Senior attackman Jeff
Cathrea added 3 goals and 2 assists of his own, while freshman Ricky Clark scored
3 goals in a strong debut. Despite the final score, Washington goaltender Nick
Pollock had an outstanding game, turning away 37 shots. Simon Fraser goalie
Tyrone Willushaw was also strong, turning away 10 shots while only allowing
2 goals.
The Clans next action will be in two weeks, when they host a weekend slate
of games against 1999 PNCLL Runner-up Whitman College and Washington State University.
The Whitman game will be held at Coquitlams Town Centre Stadium, Saturday
March 26th at 3:00 PM, while the WSU game will be at SFUs Terry Fox Field,
