Simon Fraser Clansmen 21
Oregon Ducks 6
On a record-setting day in Eugene, The #6 Simon Fraser Clansmen easily defeated the University of Oregon Ducks and captured their 5th straight PNCLL Regular Season crown. The win was Simon Fraser’s 50th straight over PNCLL Opponents, a streak that dates back to March 8, 1997, when the Clan lost 10-7 to Washington at Husky Stadium in Seattle. The win moves Simon Fraser to a perfect 10-0 (9-0 PNCLL), while the Ducks drop to 7-4 (6-3 PNCLL). Both teams, by virtue of their 1-2 ranking in PNCLL Division I, will receive a bye to the PNCLL Final Four to be held at Simon Fraser April 28-29.
The atmosphere at the game was that of a playoff game in Eugene. A rowdy Oregon crowd and a pumped-up Ducks squad was looking to topple Simon Fraser, the perennial northwest power, and take the PNCLL Division I regular season title. Both teams had already clinched byes to the PNCLL Final Four, but the #1 seed and momentum heading into the playoffs was still at stake.
But despite all the enthusiasm from the Ducks and their fans, this was not to be their day. Sophomore midfield Curtis Hodgson opened up the scoring for Simon Fraser just 1:33 in, and freshman midfielder Ryan Nosé made it 2-0 just over 90 seconds later. Oregon attackman Jared Blanchette made it 2-1 on a man-up situation midway through the quarter, but that would turn out to be as close as the Ducks would get. Defenseman Brent Hoskins responded with a man-down goal 3 minutes later, and Hodgson netted one more 47 seconds after that to make the score 4-1 Simon Fraser after 15 minutes.
Duck Attackman Pat O’Donnell gave Oregon some hope 14 seconds into the second, scoring on a feed from Blanchette to make the score 4-2, but then Simon Fraser’s powerful offense came to life. The Clan exploded for 9 goals in the second frame, while the Ducks just scored two. Hodsgon and freshman midfielder Steve Kojima each had 3 goals on the quarter to lead the Clan to a 13-3 half-time lead.
In the second half, the Clan put their offense on cruise control while freshman Matt Johnson continued his strong play of late and shined in goal, making 11 saves on the half. Johnson made many point blank saves and allowed just 3 goals on the half, 2 of them on man-up situations for the Ducks. For the half, the Clan outscored the Ducks 8-3 for a 21-6 victory. The win clinched the #1 seed in the PNCLL Final Four and sent Oregon a message that Simon Fraser isn’t ready to give up their PNCLL title just yet.
Hodgson, in a great game, had 6 goals (on 7 shots) and 3 assists for 9 points for SFU. Sophomore attackman Ricky Clark’s 5 goals on the day gave him 58 for the season, eclipsing his team record of 56, set last year. Clark scored those 56 goals in 14 games last year, yet set the record in just 10 this year. Clark also added 1 assist for a 6 point game as did Steve Kojima (5 goals, 1 assist). Matt Johnson made 16 saves in goal for the Clan. Jared Blanchette led the way for the Ducks with 1 goal and 3 assists in a losing effort.
Both teams now advance directly to the PNCLL Final Four. SFU, with the #1 seed, will play the winner of the Washington State/Pacific Lutheran game to be held next Saturday, while Oregon, the #2 seed, will host the winner of the Western Washington/Whitman game also to be held on the 21st. The PNCLL Champion will be crowned on April 29th and will receive the PNCLL’s automatic bid to the USLIA Nationals in St. Louis.

Simon Fraser Clansmen 24
Lewis & Clark Pioneers 2
Despite having only 13 players at the game, and losing their goaltender for almost 1/3 of the game, the Simon Fraser Clansmen easily defeated the Lewis & Clark Pioneers 24-2 in PNCLL Division I action Sunday in Portland, OR. The win moved Simon Fraser, the #6 team in the USLIA, to 9-0 on the season and dropped the Pioneers to 2-5.
Simon Fraser jumped out to a quick lead in the game on the strength of 3 goals each by Steve Kojima and Curtis Hodgson. However, this quarter was not without adversity. With the Clan up 5-1 12 minutes into the game, goaltender Matt Johnson was forced to the sidelines after being hit by a hot in the most awkward of places. Defender Mark Numans donned the pads, leaving SFU with just two players on the sidelines. Numans played the remainder of the half, allowing just one goal, as Simon Fraser raced to a 12-2 half-time lead.
Johsnon returned for the second half and the continued their domination of the Pioneers. Six players scored second half goals en route to a 24-2 win. Curtis Hodgson had his second straight game with at least ten points, scoring six goals and adding 4 assists. Clark also won 67% of his face-offs and picked up 16 ground balls in an outstanding performance. Ricky Clark (7 goals) and Pinder "Old Groove" Shahi (3 goals, 4 assists) both had 7 point games in support of Hodgson. Johnson and Numans combined to make 11 saves in net for the Clan.
SFU’s next game will be next Saturday in Eugene, OR, as the face the University of Oregon Ducks. The winner of this game will determine the regular season PNCLL Division I championship. SFU currently sits first with a 7-0 Division record, while Oregon is right behind them with a division record of 6-1, their only loss being a 1-goal heartbreaker against Whitman College. The two teams have already guaranteed byes to the PNCLL Final Four April 28-89 in Burnaby, but whoever wins this game will have the advantage of facing the lower ranked team in that tournament.

Simon Fraser Clansmen 31
Washington Huskies 4
The SFU Men’s lacrosse team moved to 8-0 tonight with a convincing 31-4 win over the University of Washington Huskies in Husky Stadium in Seattle, WA. Curtis Hodgson tied a team record with 9 goals and Matt Johnson made 19 saves in his best performance of the season to lead the Clan to victory.
This game was never really close, as Simon Fraser simply had too much firepower and experience for the young Huskies squad. Despite being well coached and well disciplined, UW simply lacked that talent of SFU, and that was reflected in the final score.
With SFU traveling with only 14 players due to final exams and injuries, a few players had to bear the load for the Clan in this game. Sophomore midfielder Curtis Hodgson had 9 goals and 2 assists, while Steve Kojima (7 goals, 3 assists), Pinder "Old Groove" Shahi (5 goals, 4 assists) and Ricky Clark (3 goals, 5 assists) all had strong games as well. Freshman midfielder Harry Bining had 3 goals, 1 assist and 11 ground balls in a strong game, while junior defender Brent Hoskins had 13 ground balls of his own in a strong performance.

Simon Fraser Clansmen 17

California - Davis Aggies 10
The #6 Simon Fraser Clansmen outlasted #21 UC-Davis Aggies tonight in a penalty-filled contest in Burnaby, BC. SFU overcame a driving rain, 17 minutes in penalties, and a patient, ball-control oriented Davis squad to come out with a 17-10 victory and a perfect 7-0 record. The loss dropped the Aggies to 5-4 on the season and 1-1 on their current PNCLL road trip. They easily defeated Pacific Lutheran 18-5 Sunday in Tacoma, WA.
UC-Davis came in with a reputation as a tough defending, ball-control oriented team, and the start of the game gave no surprises. Each team had possession for a couple of minutes, but two determined defenses kept the score at 0-0 for almost 5 minutes. It wasn’t until 4:55 into the game, with Davis midfielder Alex Wetterston in the box on a slashing call, that freshman Steve Kojima, in the beginning of what would be a spectacular game, opened the scoring on a great feed from attackman Ricky Clark. Clark and Kojima would add another goal each before Davis midfielder Peter Shapland opened the scoring for the aggies just over 10 minutes into the game. The teams would trade goals before the end of the quarter for a score of 4-2 Simon Fraser after 15 minutes.
In the second quarter, Simon Fraser broke open the game and was able to silence the vaunted UC-Davis defense. Steve Kojima scored 4 goals in the quarter, 3 of them coming on man-up situations. The Clan controlled most of the face-offs in the quarter and were able to run the Aggies, outscoring them 7-2 for the quarter for an 11-4 halftime lead. The 11 goals against equaled the most goals Davis had allowed in a single game this season.
The second half of the game was more even, with each team netting six goals. However, the story of the half was penalties, as the game degenerated in to slash, push and trip-fest. Simon Fraser had 11 man-up situations in the second half while UC-Davis had 8. In all, There were a total of 42 penalties called in the game for 32.5 minutes (21 penalties - 17 minutes for SFU, 21 - 15.5 for UCD).
While the 7-goal victory was a wide margin, the game could have been even more lopsided. The Clansmen hit 5 posts and had 3 goals disallowed, and Davis’ last goal came with just one second remaining in the game. With a little luck, this could have been a blowout for the Clan. As it was, the 17 goals allowed was still a season high for the Aggies, and the 17 goals for was a season low for the Clan.
Freshman attackman Steve Kojima had his best game of the season for Simon Fraser, scoring 8 goals and adding 1 assist for 9 points. Curtis Hodgson, Athen Yuen and Ricky Clark each chipped in 3 goals to complete the scoring for the Clan. Peter Shapland (2 goals, 4 assists) and Willus Wilthrow (3 goals, 1 assist) led the way for the Aggies.
Simon Fraser’s next action will come in ten days or so when they face the University of Washington in Seattle. Davis will also face the Huskies before they head home for a tough game against the current #1 team in the USLIA, the Sonoma State Cossacks.

Simon Fraser Clansmen 24

Western Washington Vikings 11

It was the same old story in Bellingham, WA Friday night as #22 Western Washington once again pushed #6 Simon Fraser early in the game but came up short. After Western attackman Jeff Maines tied the game at 9-9 9:28 into the second quarter, Simon Fraser outscored the Vikings 15-2 over the remainder of the game for a convincing 24-11 victory.
The Clan overcame freezing cold temperatures and came out scorching hot. Junior attackman Athen Yuen opened the scoring just 14 seconds into the game, and it was 6-2 SFU before Western got into the game.
With the score 8-4 to begin the second quarter, Western applied some heat of their own while Simon Fraser sort of fell asleep. Western midfielder Mike Morgan scored his third goal of the game on a 3 minute man-up situation 1:13 into the quarter. While the Clan was able to kill off the remainder of the penalty, Western still had the momentum, and was able to pick away at Simon Fraser’s lead, until Attackman Jeff Maines tied the game at 9 with just over 5 minutes left in the half. Yet, as in previous contests, the Western run only served as a wake up call for Simon Fraser. Attackman Ricky Clark and Athen Yuen scored goals just 20 seconds apart, and goaltender Matt Johnson shook off some early game jitters to go to the half leading 11-9.
Coach Daren Fridge had no interest in seeing a repeat of the previous SFU/Western tilt, which saw SFU trailing the Vikings going into the fourth. He preached to the Clan a patient ball-control offense and a disciplined defense which had proved so successful early in the game. The Clan took his words to heart, and methodically took all the air out of Western’s sails. Led by Freshman attackman Pinder Shahi’s three third quarter goals, Simon Fraser took it to the Vikings to the tune of 8-1 for the quarter. The domination continued in the fourth quarter, as SFU pumped in five more goals and Johnson shut the door on Western, making 7 fourth quarter saves while allowing just 1 goal. Final score: Simon Fraser 24, Western 11.
Pinder Shahi led the way offensively for Simon Fraser scoring 5 goals and adding 2 assists. Curtis Hodgson had 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points, while Ricky Clark, Athen Yuen and freshman midfielder Steve Kojima all had 5 point games for the Clan. The game also marked the return of two-time USLIA All-Tournament Team member Peter Morgan. Morgan had 2 goals and 1 assist and played a key role in his first game back since finishing his commitments with the Simon Fraser Men’s basketball team.
The win moves Simon Fraser to 6-0 on the season, which gives them a slim _ game lead over Oregon in the race for supremacy in PNCLL Division I. Western clings to the third and final playoff spot with a 4-3 record (its only losses to Simon Fraser (2) and Oregon). The Clan’s next action will be its final home game of the season, as they host #21 University of California-Davis of the WCLL. The 4-3 Aggies have been giving teams fits down south, holding teams to an average of less than six goals. Their three losses have been to teams ranked in the top 13 (including a 7-6 thriller against #3 Cal), so they will not be taken lightly.

Simon Fraser Clansmen 28
Whitman Missionaries 12

An impressive 11-goal third quarter run gave the Simon Fraser Clansmen a 28-12 victory over the Whitman College Missionaries in Walla Walla, WA today. The win moved Simon Fraser to 5-0 on the year and dropped Whitman to 1-2. Simon Fraser now has a 1 game lead over 4-1 Oregon for the Division lead, while Whitman drops into the pack of other teams fighting for the third and final playoff spot in PNCLL Division I.
For the third straight game, Simon Fraser came out strong. Ricky Clark opened the scoring just 58 seconds in, and the Clan had netted 5 goals before Whitman got on the board with CJ Calvert’s first of 4 goals on the day. The two teams traded goals for the rest of the quarter for a score of 7-3 SFU after 15 minutes of play.
The second quarter was a hard fought, defensive quarter. Whitman goaltender continually stoned the Clan, while the Missionary defense prevented Simon Fraser from getting many quality opportunities. It was the same on the other end, as Clan goaltender made 5 saves in the quarter. In all, each team netted 3 goals in the quarter for a 1-06 score at the half.
Whitman cam out on fire in the third quarter, scoring 2 goals before the frame was a minute old. However, this only served as a wake up call for Simon Fraser. 7 different players scored 11 straight Clan goals to close out the quarter. After this huge run, Whitman was out of the game.
Down 21-8 with just 15 minutes left, Whitman did their best to salvage the game but came up short. SFU outscored the Missionaries 7-4 in the final frame to finish with a convincing 28-12 victory. Ricky Clark had his second 10+ point game in the last three games, leading SFU with 8 goals and 3 assists for 11 points. Junior midfielder Athen Yuen had another strong game, scoring 7 goals and adding 2 assists of his own.
The Clan’s next action will be in two weeks, as they make their traditional Friday night trip to Bellingham to face Western Washington. Western usually plays well in these games with their rowdy crowd behind them, and seeing as how exciting the first game between these two was, this should be a great game. The Clan will receive an additional boost that game, as senior midfielder/attackman Peter Morgan is set to return to the team after finishing his season with the Simon Fraser basketball team.

Simon Fraser Clansmen 23
Washington State Cougars 12

In a rematch of the 2000 PNCLL Championship, the #6 Simon Fraser Clansmen once again came out on top of the #20 Washington State Cougars. Sophomores Curtis Hodgson and Ricky Clark each had 9 point games to lead the Clan, who now sit at 4-0 on top of the PNCLL.
Penalties were the key to this game. WSU started a man down for three minutes to begin the game due to a field violation. While the Clan scored just once on that opportunity, they would go on to score 10 man-up goals on 13 attempts.
Led by four first quarter goals by attackman Clark, the Clan jumped out to an 8-1 lead before Washington State knew what had hit them. They got into the game a bit in the second quarter, scoring 3 goals to the Clan’s 6 for a half-time score of 14-3 in favour of SFU.
Washington State, however, made a game of it in the second half. Led by attackman Josh Saunder’s 4 second half goals, The Cougars managed to lose by just one goal in the final 30 minutes. The Clan outscored WSU 9-8 in the second half, but the Cougars had somewhat of a moral victory, proving that they can in fact play with the Clan.
Curtis Hodsgon had 7 goals and 2 assists and Ricky Clark had 6 and 3 to lead the Clan. Freshman attackman Pinder Shahi (4 goals, 4 assists) and junior midfielder Athen Yuen (5 goals, 3 assists) each had 8 points of their own. Matt Johnson made 22 saves to backstop the Clan.
With the win, Simon Fraser moved to 4-0 in PNCLL play to give themselves a stranglehold on their fifth straight PNCLL regular season title. The loss dropped Washington State to 2-1 on the season, and they would fall to 2-2 the next day in a tough 1 goal loss to Western Washington.

Simon Fraser Clansmen 29
Montana Grizzlies 12

A week after receiving a scare from Western Washington, the Simon Fraser University Men’s Lacrosse team got back on track with a convincing 29-12 victory over the University of Montana Grizzlies. The win moved the #6 Clansmen to 3-0, while Montana dropped to 1-1.
Despite freezing cold temperatures at game time, Simon Fraser came out scorching hot. Sophomore attackman Ricky Clark scored 5 first quarter goals as the Clansmen dominated the first 15 minutes, outscoring Montana by an 8-1 margin.
It was more of the same in the second quarter, as the Clan tallied 9 goals, while freshman goaltender made 9 stops en route to a 17-3 half-time lead.
The second half degenerated into a bit of a nasty affair, as both teams racked up penalties and Montana even had one player ejected for fighting. Despite all the rough stuff, SFU continued to score. Sophomore midfielder Curtis Hodgson scored 4 second half goals, while Clark and freshman midfielder Steve Kojima each had three. Montana managed to get a few goals on the scoreboard themselves, the last three with defender Aiden Ball in net replacing Johnson.
It was a record setting night for the Clan, as Ricky Clark broke Peter Morgan’s record for goals in a game (8 vs. Oregon State in 2000), scoring 9 on 14 shots. In addition, the 41 total goals scored is a record for SFU games. Clark ended up with 12 points on the night (9 goals, 3 assists), while Curtis Hodgson (7 goals), Athen Yuen (3 goals, 4 assists), Steve Kojima (5 goals, 1 assist), and Pinder Shahi (4 goals, 1 assist) all had strong games for the Clan. Matt Johnson made 21 saves in net.
The Clan now hit the road for games against #20 Washington State University and Whitman College. Washington State is last year’s PNCLL runner up, and is looking at making a run for the title this year. Whitman, of course, had a part in possibly the most dramatic moment in SFU Lacrosse history. Trailing Whitman 10-9 in the closing seconds of the 1997 PNCLL Championship game, Mark Neufeld, falling to his knees, found Aaron Lochhead on the crease to tie the game with 7 seconds left and send it into overtime. Neufeld then capped the comeback with a goal in the extra frame, sending the Clan to what would be its first of four consecutive USLIA Nationals. The history behind these two teams makes their games always exciting.

Simon Fraser Clansmen 19 vs.
Western Washington Vikings 14

It was another close game between #8 Simon Fraser and arch-rival #23 Western Washington Friday night at Town Centre in Coquitlam. SFU overcame a 13-12 deficit heading into the fourth quarter to escape with a 19-14 victory of the 0-2 Vikings. This story was familiar to Western, as they are now 0-9 all-time against SFU, despite playing them close the majority of the time.
With the game starting under a light snowfall, Western started off hot and left the Clan in the cold. Simon Fraser got into penalty trouble early on and Western capitalized, rattling off goals on the first four man-up opportunities for a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes.
SFU got their head into the game in the second quarter. Athen Yuen scored 3 goals and added one assist for the quarter, with Ricky Clark, Curtis Hodgson and Steve Kojima contributing to the 7-goal quarter. Despite taking a number of penalties in the quarter, SFU was able to limit Western to one man-up goal and 3 overall for a 7-3 second quarter and a 9-7 half-time lead.
The third quarter was a nightmare for the Clan. With goaltender Matt Johnson in the penalty box, SFU was forced to insert midfielder Mark Girotto in between the pipes. Western took advantage of this and was able to out three shots past Girotto before Johnson was able to get back in the game. With 5 goals in just 2 minutes and 10 seconds, the Vikings had turned a 2-goal half-time deficit into a 3 goal lead half way through the third quarter.
With Western up 12-9, Simon Fraser finally got into the game for good. They stopped taking penalties and started running their offense. Maybe this Western outburst was just what they needed. With Yuen and Clark leading the way, and Johnson putting up a wall in front of the net, Simon Fraser dominated the remainder of the game. SFU outscored Western 10-2 the rest of the way to show who was the better team. With a young team dominated by underclassmen, this game was a big learning experience. The younger players learned what gets you down in a game, and also what it takes to win. To see just how well the players learned, the 2-0 Clan will host USLIA newcomer Montana next Saturday before heading on the road the following weekend to face Washington State and Whitman.

Simon Fraser Clansmen 23 vs.
Pacific Lutheran Lutes 4

Athen Yuen scored 6 goals and added 6 assists to lead Simon Fraser to a 23-4 victory over Pacific Lutheran University in their PNCLL Season opener Saturday. Curtis Hodgson added 4 goals and 5 assists while Ricky Clark notched 7 goals in the win, which was SFU’s 42nd consecutive victory over PNCLL Opponents, a streak which dates back to 1997.
Despite The Clansmen sporting seven freshmen, this game was never really in doubt. Yuen opened the scoring just 2 minutes in en route to a 4-1 first quarter. Yuen, Clark and freshman midfielder Steve Kojima each added 2 goals in the second quarter, with freshman attackman Pinder Shahi also scoring his first career goal for an 11-2 half-time lead for the Clan.
Freshman goaltender Matt Johnson shone in the second half, making 11 saves while allowing just 2 goals.
In particular, Johnson stoned the Lutes on 9 of 10 second half man-up opportunities, and 14 of 15 over the entire game.
The Clan’s next action will be this Friday night, February 16th at 7:00 PM, as they host arch-rival #23 Western Washington at Town Centre. The games between these two are always heated, so it should be a good one!
